Fight Like a Girl 1/15
Why is it even when women are portrayed as strong protagonists they as still over-sexualized? There are few female protagonists found in media and those who aren't seen as damsel in distress, looking for love still end up a victim of being over-sexualized. Often in skin tight revealing outfits that aren't necessary to fulfill their story line. The only person who this appeals to is the male audience. Women always trying to please men. When can the tyranny stop? Katniss Everdeen doesn't require skintight, wet suit like outfit to compete in the Hunger Games. I personally believe that would be quite restricting of movement. In kids movies like The Lego Movie, Wyldstyle has a depicted curvy body shape while trying to save the world. From a young age standards are implanted into your mind telling you what women should look like. Even the empowering women are reinforcing the idea of "sexy." In an ideal world media should represent all types of women not just what they want to see but in the meantime females are forced to live through the eyes of men.
Unfortunately, women must be visually appealing in order to gain recognition. We have female icons in the media that are depicted as empowered individuals that rise above the toxicity of a male-dominated world, but the problem is that the only women who rise to the top in the media industry are those that fit the beauty standard. This recycles the idea that self-worth lies within appearances, creating an irrational loophole that young girls can't identify if they can't see where sexual appeal ends and feminism begins.
